This world premiere dance project is an in-depth analysis of the works of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, which unearths elements inherent in Mexican culture that are deeply rooted in class differences. Director Zenón Barrón interprets these into the language of dance in this selection of traditionally based choreographies by focusing on specific elements within the paintings. The dances described here are a small sample of what the show features.

This premiere dance project comes alive as Zenón Barrón, Artistic Director, draws inspiration from Mexico’s Golden Era of Cinema (Epoca de Oro). Zenón incorporates elements of some of the most iconic movies of this era into a selection of tradition-based choreographies. The movies featured in the show include Bugambilia, María Candelaria, Salón Mexico, Los Tres Huastecos, Pueblerina, La Feria de San Marcos, Tizoc, Aventurera, Los Hermanos Centella, and Alla En El Rancho Grande.

Xichulense Yo Soy is a homage to the home state of Artistic Director, Zenón Barrón and was inspired by the celebratory customs of the pueblo of Xichú. This spectacular performance showcases some of Zenón’s most acclaimed choreographies while it takes you on a journey of Zenón’s reflections and vivid childhood memories. A tribute to the lost culture and music from the state of Guanajuato, world premier pieces will transport you to a magical place and time when the Xichulense people ruled Guanajuato’s Sierra Mountains of Mexico.

The Punjabi-Mexican community is a unique cultural phenomenon that Ensambles displays through a lively collaboration with Duniya Dance and Drum Company. Together, the two groups explore how this new culture evolved into our present-day communities and traditions. With both cultures having such distinctive but similar characteristics, this rare portrayal of a union between two ethnic groups is presented through a beautiful expression of dance and music.
